Our Story: Finding Inspiration near the Fireplace
“It was Christmas. I was watching the fireplace,” Guoliang (Greg) Liu said.
When firewood burns, the energy being supplied to it breaks down the cellulose
chains to form smaller molecules, which are carried off in the form of smoke.
“Firewood is really a collection of natural polymers. Its combustion breaks these
polymers into short chains, and then into small gaseous molecules before full
oxidation to carbon dioxide,” he said.
“What if we could harness that mechanism for good by using it to deconstruct
waste plastic?” he asked. “Instead of fully combusting the plastic, we could
supply controlled amounts of thermal energy to fragment the polymer chains into
more valuable chemicals than what was used to make them.”
Thus, providing a real economic incentive to reduce waste and clean the planet.
That moment began the journey that will change the world and turn waste into
useful chemicals and materials.
